LEADING POLITICAL ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP CELEBRATES JUNETEENTH CLIMATE ACTION TO ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND CUMULATIVE IMPACTS
TRENTON – The following is a statement from Ed Potosnak, Executive Director of New Jersey League of Conservation Voters, on the Murphy Administration’s plan to support legislation that will address cumulative impacts and the negative effects of climate change on communities of color.
“We’re excited that Governor Murphy chose Juneteenth, a day when we celebrate Black liberation from slavery, as the time to announce efforts to address cumulative impacts in New Jersey. We recently learned through a Harvard study that the unjust and disproportionate burden of air pollution on communities of color means residents are more likely to be diagnosed with respiratory illnesses such as asthma and to die from COVID-19. These disparities in health outcomes are unacceptable,” said Ed Potosnak, Executive Director, New Jersey LCV. “We support New Jersey Senator Troy Singleton and congratulate the Environmental Justice Alliance and our environmental justice partners in their efforts to pass S232. Addressing cumulative impacts is a major part of the New Jersey LCV legislative agenda, and we look forward to helping make this legislation the strongest it can be. We urge the swift movement of this comprehensive statewide environmental justice policy.”
