CAMDEN, NJ—Ed Potosnak, Executive Director of New Jersey League of Conservation Voters, released the following statement today on the Attorney General’s Office and Department of Environmental Protection’s announcement of major civil enforcement actions, including Natural Resource Damage lawsuits:
Today, the Attorney General Grewal and DEP Commissioner McCabe demonstrated their important commitment to environmental justice. These actions are a significant change in course from the Christie Administration which was more interested in settling for pennies on the dollar with big polluters like Exxon than protecting our communities. We’re thrilled to see Attorney General Grewal and DEP Commissioner McCabe getting back into the business of holding polluters accountable for the harm they’ve caused to our businesses, families, and environment. New Jersey League of Conservation Voters is proud to have led the efforts to get the constitutional amendment for natural resource damages on the ballot, and to have worked with our partners to pass the ballot measure with 69% of the vote. This ensures that natural resource damages can’t be stolen and will go back to the communities most harmed by big polluters.
