New Jersey LCV Responds to Double Digit Methane Gas Rate Hikes

TRENTON, NJ – The following is a statement from Ed Potosnak, Executive Director, New Jersey LCV, regarding the New Jersey Board of Utilities (BPU) vote on gas rate hikes and the impact on families.

“As long as we rely on fossil fuels to power our energy grid, New Jersey residents will continue facing rising utility bills. Fossil fuels, including methane gas, are vulnerable to global conflict and price fluctuations skyrocketing the cost for New Jerseyans. We can’t keep expecting New Jersey's working families to pay higher prices from dirty oil and gas power plants,” said Ed Potosnak, Executive Director, New Jersey LCV. “The math is simple, solar is currently the cheapest energy and if our electricity came from more solar, energy bills would be cheaper and homeowners with heat pumps would be saving even more money than they already are over their neighbors using polluting oil or methane gas furnaces this winter. Solar and wind power are not only cleaner but increasingly more affordable than oil and gas, helping shield our residents from volatile dirty fossil fuel markets. Not only will clean power drive down costs by increasing energy supply, but it also helps improve public health, creates good local jobs, reduces air pollution, addresses climate change, and makes our country energy independent. Investing in renewables isn’t just about reducing emissions; it’s about ensuring affordable, stable energy for our communities.”
