New Jersey LCV pledges to continue to lead the fight against MAGA extremism at the state and local levels

New Jersey League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Ed Potosnak issued the following statement regarding yesterday’s election results:

We join with advocates across our nation deeply troubled by the election of a dangerous pro-dirty energy presidential candidate who has a fundamental disregard for our basic human rights and who worked in his previous administration to roll back key environmental protections.

While we know that this is a dark time for many families across our state, we are encouraged that millions of New Jersey residents turned out in force to resist MAGA extremism and power pro-environment candidates to victory, from Senator-Elect Andy Kim to Congressman Frank Pallone, and on down through county and local races.

We have been here before, and we know the critical role our partners in Congress and in Trenton will play in acting as a bulwark against right-wing extremism and environmental rollbacks.

Closer to home in this election, we are proud of our work to elect environmental champions to local and county offices across our state. We elected more than 60 local environmental champions, including offshore wind champion Derel Stroud in an environmental justice community in Neptune Township; Jenny Mundell, the first-ever female mayor of Bloomfield; and Erik Heyman-Meltzer in Cinnaminson, the youngest-ever member of council and a champion for stormwater management.

And we were proud to invest a record sum of more than $260,000 to support our locally endorsed candidates.

These victories demonstrate our state’s values and our strong commitment to conservation.

And we will channel this energy to once again stand up to all efforts to poison our air, water, and land as we also work to elect a pro-environment governor and assembly next year who will stand against attacks from Washington.
