New Jersey LCV Announces First-Ever Endorsement For May Municipal Non-Partisan Elections
New Jersey’s Political Voice for the Environment Endorses Pro-Environment Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh for reelection
TRENTON - Residents in a handful of New Jersey municipalities will decide who will lead their towns for the next four years by voting in nonpartisan municipal elections on May 10.
New Jersey League of Conservation Voters (New Jersey LCV), the political voice for the environment, is making its first-ever endorsements in the May municipal elections with the endorsement of Mayor Andre Sayegh, who is running for reelection in Paterson, New Jersey.
New Jersey LCV began endorsing in legislative races in 2011 and was the first environmental organization in the state to endorse Governor Murphy for election in 2017 and reelection in 2021. The organization expanded to endorsing in local elections in 2020 and endorsed 55 local candidates throughout the state in 2021.
“It has become increasingly clear over the last few years that local leaders have enormous power,” said Allison McLeod, New Jersey LCV Policy Director. “When it comes to climate change action, safeguarding drinking water, reducing flooding, advancing environmental justice, and preserving open space and parks, a lot of the decisions are made at the local level. We want New Jerseyans to know which candidates support the environment, and Mayor Sayegh is a prime example.”
“Governing with sustainability in mind protects our city and planet for future generations. In our first four years we've renovated our Great Falls National Historic Park, invested over $6 million in parks and open spaces, started electrifying our municipal fleet, and improved the energy efficiency in our municipal buildings,” said Mayor Sayegh. “I am honored to receive the endorsement of New Jersey LCV and hope that, together, we can continue making Paterson an environmentally friendly place to live.”
Last year New Jersey LCV was one of the largest non-union spenders in the 2021 elections and invested more than a quarter of a million dollars to power environmental champions at all levels of government – from Governor Murphy to Mayors Steven Fulop of Jersey City and Ravi Bhalla of Hoboken – to victory. It marked the broadest set of endorsements ever for the organization, and in a testament to the environmental movement’s commitment to diversity, included a record number of women and people of color.
“The endorsement of Mayor Sayegh is just the beginning for us this year- there will be a lot more people on the ballot come November,” added McLeod. “We encourage local candidates of all parties with a commitment to the environment to reach out and learn more about our endorsement process.”
New Jersey LCV is a nonpartisan organization whose mission is to elect environmental champions, and it is the only New Jersey environmental group with a Political Action Committee (PAC) and Super PAC.
