Bob Smith
Senator Bob Smith (D) represents the 17th Legislative District and is running for re-election. He was elected to the Senate in 2001 after serving more than a decade in the Assembly. He holds a Bachelor of the Arts in History from University of Scranton, two Master of Sciences in Chemistry and Environmental Science, and a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law. Before serving on the State House Commission, Senator Smith was the Mayor of Piscataway and served as the Chair on the Piscataway Environmental Commission.
Senator Smith is an outspoken environmental legislator and has been at the forefront of many efforts to protect our natural resources as Chair on the Environment and Energy Committee and a member of the Joint Legislative Task Force on Drinking Water Infrastructure. He has sponsored several clean renewable energy bills, such as pushing New Jersey towards solar and offshore wind energy, creating the Clean Energy Task Force, and committing New Jersey to 80 percent renewable energy by 2050.
