New Jersey League of Conservation Voters Congratulates Gov. Murphy on His Historic Win

TRENTON - New Jersey League of Conservation Voters (New Jersey LCV) Executive Director Ed Potosnak has issued the following statement in reaction to Governor Murphy’s election victory:

Governor Murphy’s hard-fought re-election represents a critical victory for the environment and for New Jersey families who deserve clean air, safe drinking water, access to open space, environmental justice, and a clean energy future.

Governor Murphy ran on his outstanding pro-environment record, and by doing so, became the first Democrat in more than 40 years to win re-election. This powered enough supporters to the polls to buck national trends and intense energy from conservatives.

Though many of the state legislative elections remain too close to call, we are proud of our work helping elect endorsed candidates up and down the ballot, from governor to borough council.

We know that our work spending more than a quarter million dollars contacting nearly 2.3 million voters across all corners of the state made a difference. Our digital ads, viewed more than two million times, our more than 117,000 voter texts and our more than 75,000 pieces of mail educated and energized voters to come to the polls to support environmental champions.

Today’s election results demonstrate how effective it is for candidates to run on a clear message of making New Jerseyans’ lives better. Governor Murphy won because he had amassed one of the nation’s strongest records on environmental protection. He signed legislation that established a 100 % clean energy standard, implemented an aggressive offshore wind push to create jobs and spur economic development and advocated for landmark legislation that sought to address generations of systemic racism by acknowledging the cumulative impacts of pollution on low income and communities of color.

As the governor prepares to enter his second term, we want to work with him and our environmental champions in the legislature to enact bold action that protects New Jerseyans’ health, creates good-paying jobs and addresses critical threats, like climate change.
