New Jersey LCV Spends Big on Two Jersey Shore Races

TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey League of Conservation Voters Victory Fund is investing $250,000 this election cycle to propel environmental champions to victory in two critical races along the Jersey Shore — combating misinformation and helping to shore up support for offshore wind in an important part of the state.

The Victory Fund, the super PAC affiliated with New Jersey LCV, is spending big to elect Kim O’Brien to a seat on the Atlantic County Board of Commissioners and is also investing resources to re-elect incumbent Derel Stroud to the Neptune Township Committee.

“With sea levels rising and more frequent and severe storms, communities up and down the Jersey Shore are on the front lines of climate change,” said Randy Jones, New Jersey LCV Board Chair. “We’re proud to spend big on two environmental champions who will double down on a clean energy future while also implementing policies to reduce flooding and protect open space.”

The Victory Fund’s investment, which will pay for extensive digital ads, will help combat misinformation about offshore wind and explain how strong clean energy and conservation policies can head off a climate catastrophe that will devastate the Shore.

O’Brien, who is running for one of the At-Large district seat on the Atlantic County Board of Commissioners, is a lifelong educator and a member of the Somers Point Green Team and led efforts to get the town’s schools certified as Sustainable Jersey Schools.

She also believes it is important to have economic growth that is in line with green initiatives and job creation that makes housing affordable.

In Neptune Township, New Jersey LCV Victory Fund is seeking to protect an incumbent with a strong environmental track record.

While serving on the Township Committee and various other municipal bodies, Stroud had fought to implement legislation to reduce flooding and pursue grant opportunities to better manage stormwater. He also supports measures to protect Neptune Township’s tree canopy.

Both candidates are running in key regions along the Jersey Shore, where New Jersey’s growing offshore wind industry is promising to bring union jobs, economic development and clean energy to power hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses.

“This unprecedented investment in local elections will ensure that voters will understand how good environmental policy translates into a better quality of life for families across Neptune Township and Atlantic County,” added Jones. “We’re proud to be part of the coalition to power these environmental champions to victory.”
